Firstly folks - newbie here so please be gentle

I am trying to understand the various flavours of Windows Embedded CE and how they are or arne't supported on the ARM chipset. My reasoning is I have an ARM11 based device (SmartQ V7) and its runnning Windows Embedded CE 6.0, but most applications which indicate they will work or Windows CE and ARM chips don't work.

One example is - Calligrapher for Windows CE - http://www.phatware.com/index.php?q=...igrapher/specs

It installs fine via ActiveSync, but when you try to use it nothing happens - when you try and run the executable you get an error saying unsupported device.

Loads of other programs won't even install via activesync - and if they come as CAB's when they are copied to the device the CAB doesn't install (This application cannot run on this device. Please install the application specific to this device type)

I do understand the principle of chip and OS support - just don't understand why they don't work if they are specified as supporting ARM and Windows CE.

Any help that you can give would be much appreciated

These CE 5 and 6 netbooks all seem to be pretty picky about CAB files. I usually extract the CABs on the PC using MSCEInf, and then copy the folders and files it creates onto the device via SD card. Even after this some Windows Mobile DLLs missing from core CE 6 may be necessary to get many apps working. Some of these devices provide these DLLs in a special folder, and you just have to copy them over to the program's folder.

I've also found that sometimes the ". . . not a valid Windows CE application" error can be corrected simply by choosing the correct version of aygshell.dll.

To find out which DLLs a program needs, you can view it in a hexeditor on the PC and search for the text string .dll.
