I have a 10" windows CE device that I wanted to turn into a digital picture frame. So I tried to load a few slideshow.exe's for windows ce but it won't recognize the .exe as an install file (says its not an installation program). I must be missing something. Heres the hard part; Theres no way for me to tell what kind of hardware it is. The only thing I can find is that its running windows ce v4.20. My only connection is ethernet, I can map to my pc to transfer files. I think its some kind X86 processor. Does anyone know where I can start?? Any ideas/suggestions??

Also no sync program

Hi,
Since it is an unknown device, this will be challenging. You need to know the processor type and OS version at a minimum to select a compatible application for the device.

I managed to get total commander to install. It was a x86.cab file. This seems to be the only way to install an app. However when I tried to run the .exe it says it was not a valid ce program. At least got something to install lol.

That's because you used the x86 CAB file. LOL

Use the ARM CAB file.

Thats the strange part, it won't recognize the arm cab, says not valid. I used total commander because there are install files for all types of devices. I tried cab files for pocket pc (arm, x86) and windows CE (x86). The only one that would install was the pocketPC X86 but the app would not run. There has to be something missing somewhere

Some CE 4.x devices are quirky about running CABs; most CE 5 and 6 devices won't even run most CABs. I suspect because these are non-platform OS versions often made for specific uses, the file wceload.exe (when it's even there, as it is in your case) is a barebones version that can't read many CAB headers. The workaround is to extract the CAB on a PC and then copy the resulting files/folders onto the device. There's a utility called MSCEInf that will do this:

There are versions in several languages, including English. See the links near the bottom of the above-linked page.

Thanks a million CE Geek!!! I extracted the files like you said and I got total commander to run with the pocket pc arm version and the winCE version. Now that I know the I need the arm version of software I should be able to find something.

One thing I did notice is that anything I copy to the device is deleted after I cycle power. The only exception is the folder "hard disk". I would hope if I find a reg editor that I can run I could change this option somewhere/somehow.

You can't, unfortunately. The device has a persistent registry that wipes RAM clean during each reboot - and you can't disable it, even though there are registry keys for it. There is a workaround, however, as you've discovered: use the flash storage folder. You can also use it to preserve your shortcuts:
